Description (Click to toggle Visibility)

Located in Speedway, Indiana, Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a National Historic Landmark and has been a race venue since 1909. It’s feature race since 1911, the Indianapolis 500, consumes the state of Indiana each May, with a capacity crowd over a quarter of a million strong.

Originally surfaced with tar, but requiring a more durable surface, the Speedway was later repaved with over three million bricks, eventually removed and repaved with asphalt. The oval itself remains very close to the original specifications, with only small changes over the years such as larger and smaller flat aprons inside the banking.

Available Configurations:

2013 Oval – 2.5 mile oval
Always evolving with the times, the basic configuration of the oval has remained the same since first constructed in 1909. Deceptively difficult, the four turns of the oval are distinctly different. Always inches from disaster, and often inches from other vehicles, it is both a physical and mental ordeal to compete here.

Completing a lap is easy, with just four left turns, the challenge is doing it on the limit for hundreds of miles.

2014 Grand Prix – 2.439 mile roadcourse
Completed just weeks before the Inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis, the all-new roadcourse is wider and provides ample overtaking opportunities.

A lap starts clockwise on main straight, braking hard to enter the infield loop inside turn four of the oval. The track jinks through a chicane and directly out onto Hulman Straight, which heads directly north in the middle of the circuit. After this, a set of high-speed esses lead you back out to the oval between turns one and two, before you tackle the very tight and reconfigured ‘snake pit’ inside turn one of the oval, and head out onto the main straight.

2013 Grand Prix – 2.619 mile roadcourse
After the final F1 GP in 2007, IMS built an infield roadcourse section inside turn one of the oval. This complex, along with removal of the double apex from the end of Hulman Straight, made the circuit suitable for motorcycle racing and sportscars.

A lap starts on main straight, braking to tackling the infield section inside turn four of the oval. The track sweeps back and forth until the Hulman Straight, which heads directly north in the middle of the circuit. After this, a set of medium speed esses lead you back out to the oval between turns one and two, before you tackle the very tight ‘snake pit’ inside turn one of the oval, and head out onto the main straight.

2007 Grand Prix – 2.605 mile roadcourse
A defining feature is the final turn, where cars are flat-out around turn one of the oval – in the wrong direction.

A lap consists of a clockwise run down the main straight, before braking and tackling an infield section inside turn four of the oval. The track gently sweeps back and forth until the Hulman Straight, which heads directly north in the middle of the circuit. After that comes a much tighter series of turns, where even seeing the apex can be difficult. Exiting that section, it is a flat-out blast all the way from turn three to cross the line.
