**Note** This older mod was posted by us, rFC staff, and not '1LeSvT'. We've added him as the modder because he's the last one known to have worked on updates, but he has never claimed to be the mod's original author. The original modder is unknown to us. We published this mod because another user has created an addon car which requires this original mod. Our goal is to share this work with the community without stepping on any toes, so if you are the original creator of the mod and would like it removed, please send us a message or comment in the thread.

I'm not exactly the unknown modder, but the missing link. I moved the original HPC mod for F12002, which was a conversion of SCGT cars, into F1 Challenge, and did a lot of editing to improve those cars. I also did more conversions from SCGT, and did a lot of editing to make those look better as well. Just about all the cars in 5.5 besides the new ones like the M8F, T260, and P54--which I think are beautiful--come from my F1C Can-Am carset. I make no great claim for it except that I worked very hard to make the cars look better and more accurate. Vince Klothro shut it down at Race Sims Central over the same technicality about using his beloved readme file that he complains about here; hence the origin of these cars became very murky. I've never seen anyone as OCD as him about such a mediocre mod--I made the HPC cars I worked on look light-years better, as well as the SCGT ones I converted myself, and I did try to acknowledge the original authors and converters. I agree that Can-Am still hasn't gotten the mod it deserves, but this is a good start on getting past SCGT.

I totally agree that the Can-Am has never been properly simulated and that this is the best ver to date. There are some errors of commission and omission, but overall, it's a respectable effort. I would only quibble with a lackadaisical physics model (these cars had a lot more grip...as may be seen comparing their lap times with RW lap times of the same model) and a somewhat crude graphics model.
In the RW, the early Can-Am cars were more interesting, because everybody was trying everything (de Dion tubes, the "transistorized" Shadow, varied engines and trannies, and--most important of all--Jim Hall's aero for the 2E and the 2J). Later, the series came to be dominated by one make (the McLaren 8-series) and later by Penske's "Porsche Panzer" (the 917-30).
The most interesting aspect of this mod is clutch slip (something I've never experienced in a sim before), even if a bit over- done. At first I thought it was wheel spin, so I kept increasing the diff locking until I realized I wasn't seeing any directional instability. Then the light came on!
Kudos!

Can't find MATRA 650 and Alpha 333. Are this car presented in this mod or must download its separate?

To Highbank,
I'm the one who drove the 917/30.
When you choose your car you have the possibility to modified it.
For each car you have "MODIFICATION"'.
For the porsche 917 you can choose 3 kinds of chassis and engine.
The basic 917 chassis, the 917/10K and the 917/30.
It is important to known that when you choose 917/10K or 917/30 there is no graphic change ! Only the power or the boost preasure change or can be change!
Therefore it was not a joke when i said that i drove 917/30.
Inside the "MODIFICATION" you can also change the feedback force, the gearbox, the chassis and many more
Keeep racing !

Thanks for the replies on this, we've added some of the credits to the description.
Vince Klortho, I'm sorry you feel that way and not sure i understand the root of your position. Since I've been admin here, I've done my best to keep illegal mods from the site and have worked with many different modders to accomodate their various needs. To me, the goal is allowing people to share and enjoy mods while respecting the modders who create them. It's not always easy but we're doing the best we can.

The comment about driving the 917-30 at the begining of the thread is a mistake right? I've never found a 917-30 for the mod anywhere, if there is one might someone kindy point the wat to "said beasty"? Love Dave's work on this. My favorite racing series of all time by far. Several 68-70s era drivers have told me these are "point and shoot" cars the traction issue is due to so much horsepower and torque, they were unbelievable to watch, I saw them at Riverside for most of the great classic years. Awesome cars driven by the sports most awesome drivers.

Great Mod but some parts of the cars are invisible am I the only one with this problem and could it be my graphics settings ?
